My Top 10 Games of 2013

So once again I am going to run down of my top 10 games of 2013. Now keep in mind, this list is based on games that were released in 2013 and that I actually played. There are plenty of games that were released in 2013 that could easily make any top ten list, however if I did not play them, then you will not find them in this list. Also this list is based on all platforms including portables. Although I am not including iOS games this year, because I still do not consider it a legit gaming platform for real gamers, so deal with it.

10. State of Decay

State of Decay

While it had it’s quirks and horrible frame rate issues on Xbox 360, I still throughly enjoyed the many hours I spent playing surviving inside the world of State of Decay. I really enjoyed finally playing a zombie survival game where I could actually collect and store supplies, being able to have an upgradable base and more. If they had added in coop multiplayer then could have easily been in my top five. I never ended up purchasing the PC version of the game, but with all of the modding available I might end up giving it a go.

9. Resogun

Resogun is quite easily the best PlayStation 4 exclusive currently out (Sorry Killzone). After picking up my PS4 I downloaded Resogun, mainly because it was free for PlayStation Plus members, otherwise I probably would have just ignored it. Well it turned out to be amazing and one of the best classic arcade shooter type games I have played in a long time.

8. Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4

I have been an avid Battlefield player since the days of Battlefield 1942. Every time a new one comes out I pick it up on day one and Battlefield 4 was no exception. It’s a great game, however it did have some major issues when it was first released and it would have ended up higher on the list if those issues did not exist. Also it feels a lot like Battlefield 3, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since that was an amazing game itself.

7. Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts

There is a lot of hate associated with Ghosts and I understand why. Most people would wonder how I could rank Ghosts above games like BF4 and Resogun. The singleplayer campaign is just ok, and most of the multiplayer maps suck. However, it still sticks to most of what makes the Call of Duty games great and I still find the multiplayer incredibly fun. New additions and features on the multiplayer side of things have added a lot and I still enjoy them game to this day. I will probably end up picking up the expansions/map packs when they release as well.

6. The Last of Us

The Last of Us

When The Last of Us released there was a ton of hype surrounding the game. I pretty much ignored the game though mainly because I never used my PS3 for gaming because of the hate I have towards the PS3 controller. Well a friend let me borrow the game and I was hooked right from the start. Even though I hated every minute of using the PS3 controller, I powered through my hate and it was well worth it. And if anyone is wondering, I absolutely love the new PS4 controller.

5. Papers, Please

Papers, Please

So I was browsing through Twitch one night and I saw quite a few people playing this game. I had never heard of it and when I looked it up and read the premise of the game I thought it sounded hilarious. You are an immigration inspector at the entrance to your country, how can you not love that? After watching a few streamers play for awhile I picked up the game from Steam and immediately played for at least two hours. I love the throwback art style, sound effects, atmosphere and the overall feel of the game. If you haven’t tried it out, get it now. It’s cheap and can run on almost any PC or Mac.

4. PokΓ©mon X

Pokemon X

Ah yes Pokemon. I will admit, I did not grow up in the Pokemon generation. It just didn’t exist when I was a kid. When it did get popular in the US I was already in high school and did not care about it. Sometime around 2005 I tried out one of the Pokemon games on a Game Boy Advance and I was hooked on it for weeks. I wanted to collect them all! Anyhow college got busier and I didn’t have the time to play anymore. Fast forward to 2013, Pokemon X releases and my urges from 2005 resurface. Should I get it? Sure! I still play it to this day and it’s amazing.

3. NBA 2K14

NBA 2K14

I have been buying NBA 2K every year for the past four years and every year it gets better and better. NBA 2K14 is no different and it was one of the first PS4 games that I picked up. They really did a good job this year on the MyGM mode and the My Career mode. You will get very addicted to keep wanting to make your player in My Career Mode better and better. To top it off, the game looks amazing this year. I can’t wait to see what 2K does with the series over the next few years.

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V

Not so fast, so you thought you wouldn’t see Grand Theft Auto V on this list? Wrong. GTA V is amazing and it clearly deserves the number two spot on my list. The singleplayer campaign and all side quests were fun and always kept me on the edge of my seat. GTA V ended up being the last big game that I played on my 360 before getting rid of the old champion after I picked up a PS4. GTA V would have made the number one spot easily if the online portion of the game would have lived up to it’s hype, which it did not. However the online side of things were still fun to jump in to every once and a while. When GTA V releases on PC, I will buy it.

1. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

This now brings us to the number one game on my list, Animal Crossing: New Leaf! After wanting one for awhile I finally picked up a 3DS XL in mid-2013 and along with it I bought Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2, and Monster Hunter 3. I had never played an Animal Crossing game before, but I heard they were fun and addicting and yes they were right.

Animal Crossing looks like a basic kids game, but it’s far from that. I don’t even think a kid could really play the game correctly. It’s deep and fun with always something to do, build, or achieve. Since I bought the game in mid-2013 I have a ton of hours in it and I also still play it to this day. I let my Wife create a character in my town and she got so into the game that I bought her a 3DS XL of her own and her own copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I have convinced numerous other people to pick up the game as well and everyone loves it.

Honorable Mentions

Don’t Starve, Madden 25, Outlast
